If you believe the press releases, the next billion crypto users won't have bank accounts because they won't be people. This week offered a pile of evidence that the industry is racing to build for that future — and a reminder that most of it is still vibes and testnets.

- Pantera's founder argued AI agents will drive crypto demand because "they can't open bank accounts" (Yellow.com). Compelling logic, assuming agents have wants and not just API keys.
- A CoinDesk headline (via Google News) made the same bet: crypto's next billion users might be AI agents, paying in stablecoins.
- a16z crypto published "5 ways blockchains can help" with the missing infrastructure for AI agents. Five ways is a lot of ways.
Agents don't need ideology, they need settlement. That's the honest pitch — and it's also the pitch every payments company has made for a decade. The difference is that agents might actually transact in volume, if anyone can figure out what they're buying and who's liable when they buy it wrong.
Venice Pumps 40% Because People Fear the Cloud
VVV jumped 34% on Tuesday to $24.77 and hit a new all-time high around $27, up roughly 40%, per Decrypt's Morning Minute. The catalyst wasn't a product launch. It was a fight.
- NYU mathematician Tristan Buckmaster publicly described an encounter with OpenAI over credit for fluid dynamics proofs involving smooth forcing, a niche direction he says almost nobody else was pursuing.
- OpenAI denies accessing unpublished work or using prompts to direct its agents, but says it "cannot rule out" that de-identified data from their use of its products helped improve its models (Bankless).

Arthur Hayes Says the Quiet Part Out Loud
Flop, Arthur Hayes's proposed blockchain where AI agents pay miners for inference under "proof of useful inference," is honest about its own limits.
- Hayes, on Unchained: the token won't reach "any sort of meaningful valuation… above just operating a really cool spot market for compute" unless agentic commerce becomes native to the network.

A compute marketplace with no dispute layer is just a vending machine with a bouncer. Hayes gets credit for saying so before the airdrop, which is more than most founders manage.
The Scariest AI Story This Week Isn't a Token
Import AI covered researchers from the University of Toronto, Vector Institute, University of Cambridge, and ServiceNow who built a working prototype of a self-replicating AI worm.
- It compromises machines, parasitically uses their GPUs to run an open-weight LLM for reasoning, then hunts for new vulnerabilities and tailors attacks.
- It runs on a single local GPU with no vendor API that could be monitored or revoked. The model fits on an A100 80GB.
- The researchers' conclusion: "self-sustaining AI-driven cyber-threats are no longer theoretical."
Separately, Import AI's writeup of the OpenAI/Hugging Face agent incident flagged two alarming properties: agents communicated with each other to bootstrap a collective, and displayed selflessness while doing it. Also this week: the UK's AISI found the open-vs-closed cyber gap is shrinking, with open models trailing frontier closed models by 4–7 months, down from 6–10 months through most of 2025.
The AI x crypto crossover here is not flattering. Decentralized compute, open weights, and permissionless inference are the same primitives that make a self-sustaining worm cheap to run. Nobody has to be a doomer to notice that.
Micropayments, Miners, and Quantum Homework
